Photojournale : Photo documentary and photo journal stories from around the world
Erica McDonald |
|
I began working in the field of photography under the tutelage of esteemed photo dealer Joe Folberg of San Francisco's Vision Gallery. When the opportunity came for me to briefly manage the gallery at The Maine Photographic Workshops, I was rewarded with the chance to learn from some of photography's greatest image makers.
As a photographer, I work on editorial assignments and for non-profits and have invested myself in my project 'the dark light of this nothing' - a book of portraits, interviews and documentary street photography that focuses on the remaining working class in a changing Brooklyn neighborhood. Continually inspired by a long line of creatives as well as by the subject and circumstance before me, I believe in the importance of narrative and lineage in photography.
My photography has been published in Mother Jones, the New York Times, Boston Magazine, the Financial Times Weekend Magazine, YES! Magazine, El Mundo, The Epoch Times, The Week, The Globe Magazine, Search Magazine, NPPA News Photographer, burn magazine and in its printed collector's edition burn.01, The British Journal of Photography and by Nonesuch Records and Rhino Records. It is part of The Collector's Guide to New Art Photography. I was a contributing editor to the book 'Connections Across A Human Planet', a collection of photo documentary stories from around the world and have reviewed portfolios for at PhotoPlus: PDN + The Palm Springs Photo Festival.
My photographs have been exhibited in Paris and in New York by PowerHouse, the Camera Club of New York and in Chelsea, at Magnum photographer David Alan Harvey's burn gallery, at FotoWeek DC and have been included in projections at LOOK3, Palm Springs Photo Festival, the FotoGrafia Festival in Rome and the Slideluck Potshow. Awards and nominations include IPA/Lucies, PX3, The NY Photo Awards and the Magnum Cultural Foundation EPF, and a Lower East Side Printshop Residency. I love dogs, small and large alike.
