punk - Yangon (Burma)
punk - Yangon (Burma) |
Description: |
Modern music in Burma is not merely gasping for freedom, it is gasping for money. In a country still grappling with the first steps of development, rock n?roll doesn?t top the list of investment priorities, public or private, nor can it rely on Burma?s feeble middle class to fill the gap. Without financial support, clients, sound equipment, instruments, even the most famous rock stars struggle to finance their concerts.
?We all work within certain limits, agrees Myow Aung, a young hip hop singer and founder of the band Green Plant. Since we can?t say everything we want to say, we use very ?Burmese? modes of expressions. But we face other difficulties. It?s very hard to find instruments in Yangon, and we can only rehearse when there?s electricity. To tell you the truth, we only work with half of what we need.? |
